Recommending a bilingual paraprofessional
Students who are not proficient in English, as determined by the LAB-R/NYSESLAT, will receive special education services in a bilingual class. In the event that a bilingual class is not available, the student will receive an alternate placement with a bilingual paraprofessional until a bilingual class becomes available.
A bilingual paraprofessional is recommended on the Recommended Special Education Programs/Services section of the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
To recommend a bilingual paraprofessional
- Locate the student's profile.
How?
- From the Actions bar, click Documents.
A list of all documents for the student appears.
- Click Individualized Education Program (IEP).
The IEP document appears.
Note: If the IEP document does not appear on the list, create a new IEP document.
- From the Actions bar, click the Select drop-down () icon.
- From the pop-up menu, click Recommended Special Ed Programs and Services.
The Recommended Special Education Programs/Services section appears.
- From the drop-down menu, choose the recommended program or service.
- From the Language of Service drop-down menu, choose the student's primary language.
Note: If English is selected, you will not be able to specify a bilingual paraprofessional.
- Click the Save, Continue Editing button.
- At the top of the Recommended Special Education Programs and Services section, check the Yes checkbox to request a bilingual paraprofessional if a provider in the selected language is not available.
- Check the with bilingual paraprofessional checkbox.
- Complete all remaining fields.
- Repeat steps 6 - 11 for all applicable programs or services.
- Click the Save, Done Editing button.
