Handling questions about AA-1 messages from SESIS

If any part of a special education assessment is not completed within the mandated timeline, the case is considered to be out of compliance. When this happens, SESIS sends a message to the individual that created the Assessment Planning document. The message instructs the individual to review the student's file and determine if the case should be referred to the Committee on Special Education (CSE). The CSE then sends an AA-1 (Assessment Authorization) notice to the student's parents or guardians, to inform them of their right to obtain an evaluation at the expense of the New York City Department of Education (DOE).

Note: SESIS sends an AA-1 message the day after the Individualized Education Program (IEP) is due, even if all evaluations have been completed. However, if the IEP team has requested assistance with the evaluations, SESIS will not send an AA-1 message.
